ABOUT THE WEBINAR

This online session is dedicated to addressing key theoretical and conceptual frameworks that underpin Cultural Ecosystem Services (CES) and Biocultural Heritage. By fostering interdisciplinary dialogue among participants from natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, heritage professionals and policy-making, the webinar aims to:

  • Examine the evolving definitions and scopes of CES and Biocultural Heritage.

  • Discuss open questions, such as how CES and Biocultural Heritage can inform strategies for ecological and cultural resilience.

  • Highlight critical areas for further exploration, including the role of local knowledge, the integration of traditional practices, and the challenges of classification within global frameworks.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

The webinar will feature expert-led discussions, conceptual overviews, and opportunities for collaborative dialogue. Topics to be explored include:

  • Intersections between ecosystems, cultural identity, and heritage preservation.

  • The role of Biocultural Heritage in promoting biodiversity and sustainability.

  • Open methodological and theoretical questions regarding CES and its application to Nature-Based Solutions (NbS).

WHAT’S NEXT?

This webinar serves as a preparatory stage for the in-person workshop and congress to be held on May 20-21, 2025, at the University of Coimbra. The follow-up event will focus on practical applications, fieldwork, and case studies to connect theoretical insights with real-world challenges and solutions.

4

OUTPUTS

The discussions and insights from this webinar will contribute to a white paper synthesizing findings and recommendations from both events. This strategic document will be added to the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) of ARCHE and support future initiatives in integrating cultural and ecological dimensions into sustainable development.

We encourage participants from diverse disciplines and sectors to join us in this critical dialogue, setting the stage for deeper exploration at the May congress.

BE PART OF THIS TRANSFORMATIVE DIALOGUE BRIDGING CULTURE, NATURE, AND SUSTAINABILITY.
