Promoting Inclusive Soil Literacy through Art and Education with 8 Soil Orchestras in Europe (Soilscape Project)
The European SOILSCAPE project explores the potential of cultural and creative activities, artists and civil society organisations to promote soil conservation in Europe and beyond. Coordinated by the French Soil Sciences Society (AFES), in partnership with 18 organisations from 10 European countries, and in collaboration with experts in soil science, the arts, human sciences and decision-making, it aims to transform our relationship with soil through artistic and participatory approaches. To achieve this objective, SOILSCAPE is building a network of players in 8 countries, with the aim of engaging citizens and professionals. It will mobilise €1.85 million in financial and technical support for inspiring artistic initiatives, while developing international collaborations with UNESCO and the Soil Health Action Coalition. SOILSCAPE's approach promotes the cultivation of artistic soil intelligence, education based on local contexts, and innovative communication strategies, notably via a European educational portal and the organisation of national festivals dedicated to soil in 8 countries. By 2028, the aim is to extend its activities to 30 regions. The project is divided into four phases: (i) a survey phase, in which societal perceptions of soil and the role of the arts in enhancing its value are analysed; (ii) a preparation phase focused on structuring the network and developing strategies centred on creativity; (iii) an action phase, with support for 36 artistic initiatives devoted to soil; (iv) a perspective phase, aimed at deploying these initiatives on a large scale once the project has ended. By combining art, culture and science, SOILSCAPE aims to transform our relationship with soil and encourage collective action to preserve it. This communication will present the project to the participants of the Congress on Cultural Ecosystem Services and Biocultural Heritage, showing how it can be part of the interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary dialogue between natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and policymakers.
