Transboundary governance for fire-smart landscape – a case study of Gata and Malcata mountains

Landscape management is crucial for risk reduction, particularly in mountainous areas such as the Gata (Spain) and Malcata (Portugal) regions, both of which are at high risk of forest fires. Since 2016, the 'MOSAICO' project in Sierra de Gata has involved local communities in promoting the agrosilvopastoral economy and assessing management impacts. In 2021, Malcata established an 'Integrated Landscape Management Area' (AIGP), with a landscape redesign plan approved in 2024 and 20 years of funding. The 'PHOENIX' project aims to enhance transboundary landscape governance, fostering collaboration between these initiatives to create resilient landscapes and balance ecosystem services.
