Coastal and Marine Management and the Biodiversity Protection Program of Brazil from the Marangatu Network: Connecting Biocultural Heritage and Conservation Actions

In a world marked by climate injustice, the dialogue between science, social technologies, and traditional communities offers innovative solutions. The Marangatu Network operates in this context, promoting the conservation and management of coastal and marine territories as part of the Biodiversity Research Program (PPBio), linked to the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology. Among the Network's actions, the "Coastal and Marine Management Polygons" stand out as an innovative governance model. Led by Indigenous Peoples and Traditional Communities, in partnership with governmental bodies, these spaces promote ecosystem preservation through traditional knowledge and collective action. Aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals, the Marangatu Network proposes policies prototyped through participatory methodologies, strengthening cultural sovereignty and biocultural heritage. This collective effort represents the interconnection between biocultural heritage and conservation actions, advancing towards a more equitable and sustainable territorial governance.
